Hello, I’m Jo
I am a painter based in Surrey, working in oils and watercolour. My work explores the quiet beauty of the natural world — from woodland paths and riverbanks to seasonal still life studies.
My paintings are rooted in observation and sketchbook practice. I often begin with small, intuitive studies made outdoors or from collected references, which then develop into larger, more considered pieces in the studio.
I am particularly drawn to subtle seasonal shifts — the softness of early spring, the muted tones of late autumn — and aim to capture these moments through expressive colour and layered mark-making.
I have a background in illustration and mixed media, which continues to influence my approach, especially in my use of texture, composition and detail. Over time, my focus has shifted more fully towards painting as a primary form of expression.
Alongside my painting practice, I share my process through sketchbooks, tutorials and online classes. My teaching focuses on helping others develop confidence in their own creative practice, particularly through observational drawing and painting.
I live and work in Surrey, where much of my inspiration comes from local landscapes, including woodland areas, rivers and nearby countryside.
